About the event
Headbands for Hospice is inspired by Hannah Maschler (Straker), a wonderful woman who sadly left this world 2 days before Christmas 2023. She had lived with cancer for many years but managed to live life to the full and even in her final days wanted to raise money for the Hospice. Wearing a wig or beanie is not always comfortable after chemotherapy (especially during the summer). Hannah was known for her stylish dress and panache (one of her favourite words). She discovered wire headbands and suggested that the Global Stitch up make them and raise money for the Hospice who had looked after her so carefully with aroha.
Global Stitch up is a creative hub based at Cultural Conversations where we want women from diverse backgrounds to
- Feel safe and empowered.
- Upskill but also learn from each other’s cultural traditions.
- Engage in conversation and make new friends.
- Gain business independence and responsibility.
- Feel motivated.
Our current group welcomes over 20 women from India, Colombia, Japan, Chile, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Thailand and Singapore.
We are delighted to partner with the ‘Hands up for Hospice’ May fundraiser. Our headbands have been made from a variety of fabric including recycled sarees, kimono, batik, sarong, scarves and fabric from West Africa.
All profits will go towards continuing to provide a holistic approach to high quality compassionate palliative care with dignity and respect for all cultures by Nelson Tasman Hospice.
